Day 28 - Planning guides

There was a new intern working with Alissa today. I forgot what his name was but he is currently a graduate student at CSU Stanislaus getting his Masters in Counseling. While my primary work is the “back end” of academics, this intern was doing the “front end”. He worked closely with Alissa to overview and audit every student athlete’s major coursework, ensuring that they were registered for the proper classes for their progress towards degree and if waitlisted, finding a way for the athletes to get into the class. There seemed to be a lot of conflict with class schedules with athletes who were trying to get in a specific class that was only offered during fall term. While they complained about that, I was complaining about transfer students and students who changed their major. It was very difficult to cross check courses and to not double count units. The degree audits in each student athletes’ file included classes completed up to spring 2015. Some students would claim a major but it was left to my discretion if they were taking the general major if they didn’t declare a concentration. However, there were quite some instances where a concentration was not declared but major elective coursework indicated a specific concentration. This was also left to my discretion to declare a concentration based on cross referencing the major course requirements with the student-athlete’s degree audit and transcript.

I was able to complete all biological sciences and begin psychology majors. A total of 15 student-athletes’s planning guides.
