Day 15 - End of the year compliance

Lately, Ben and Alissa have been dealing with end of the year compliance meetings. I have sat in on several of the meetings with the teams, today it was Track and Field. Ben and I went outside and I handed out forms to student athletes. This compliance meeting regarded changes in eligibility status, changes in medical insurance, and authorization for random drug testing.

Ben had announced changes to eligibility status. Students now have to be enrolled in 12 progress towards degree units and must pass 9 to remain eligible. Their sport will not count towards the 12 units. 6 of the 12 units can be units towards a minor. Winter units passed will be for progress towards degree but not for eligibility. Summer units can be used for both.

Ben emphasized summer workouts. Student athletes in non-fall sports cannot receive any coaching for workouts from any coach. They may be supervised and be spoken to regarding technique for safety purposes but cannot participate in a formally conducted practice. Athletes may not endorse any product off any kind. He explained there is a difference between posting a picture saying “I like my new shoes” versus “Thanks Nike for a great pair of shoes”. Athletes may not also be wearing brand names and endorsing them while wearing any Stan State gear. This is a violation of a student athletes’ amateurism.

Afterwards, we walked to the baseball field to get signatures from the baseball coach regarding student athlete transfers. One athlete wants to be granted permission to be contacted by other CCAA schools (which was not signed), another wants to be granted permission to be contacted by schools outside of the CCAA (signed) and the last is transferring to the NAIA therefore just needing a signature to transfer hiss eligibility.

Since coaches have been finalizing their schedules for the following season, Ben had me look over each sports schedule and make sure the schedule is compliant with the number of allotted competitions and to look up which games could potentially be considered discretionary or annual exceptions.
