I attended a compliance meeting this morning when I first arrived. The meeting took place during spring break so several days of the meeting were held to ensure all coaches have the ability to attend. During the compliance meeting, Ben did a basic overview of eligibility requirements for new recruits from high school and transfer students. It was emphasized that official transcripts were needed and no more screenshots would be taken any longer. This was needed because if the transfer were to be pursued, the transcripts would be uploaded the NCAA eligibility center. Coaches were reminded about 4-2-4 transfers and eligibility statuses.
Summer was around the corner therefore, no mandatory practices were to be held. All students could volunteer their time to work out but cannot be specifically instructed to workout with the exception of some sports such as volley and cross country whose sport is in the fall season. Whether athletes are getting specific instruction, the activity must be supervised. Bylaw 17.1.6 states:
Sports-Safety Certified Staff Member Presence During Countable, Physical Activities – An institutional staff member with current certification in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillator (AED) use must be present any time a student-athlete participates in a physical, countable athletically related activity.
The rest of the day I spent with Ben in his office. He had me review hours for all sports to ensure compliance and not exceeding daily or weekly practice/competition time allotted. I found that so coaches did not add the math correctly, therefore needing to be corrected. Ben let me navigate through the NCAA apps website and LSDBI.
