This morning, Kim and I sat down to talk about upcoming dates and events: Student-Athletes President Breakfast, Tournament of Champions softball tournament, golf tournament, career fair, NCAA Eligibility workshop, and sports banquet. Afterwards, I took the time to interview Kim for her bio page on the site.

Every Tuesday, the athletics department staff holds a weekly meeting with the athletic director. This week, the AD, Mike Matoso was out of town, so Kim conducted the meeting. I was introduced to all of the staff and a brief description of my schooling along with my goals for this internship. Sitting in on the meeting, the staff went over:

  • Funds received from crab feed

  • Career fair for student-athletes; 14 companies contacted, looking for more

  • ASI might go on strike

  • The department is seeking more athletic support from its athletes for the universities spring sports

  • Cheer took second place at their regional competition over the past weekend

I later was able to sit in on a staff meeting with the FAR (Faculty Athletic Representative), Kim, the Academic Advisor, Alissa, and Compliance Coordinator, Ben. They reviewed special cases of their student athletes and what plans they have moving forward in helping these individuals succeed. The special cases included student-athletes who dropped from roster, transferred in, who are ineligible, international student-athletes, and student-athletes on medical leave with a hard waiver.

Afterwards, I just spent the remainder of the day with Ben with my nose in the NCAA manual and him commentating some of his day’s work to me.
